Great Lakes
Lighthouse Odyssey
By Ann and John Mahan
The Great Lakes — vast inland seas — have the world's largest concentration of lighthouses. John and Ann take viewers on a breathtaking journey to lighthouses on all five Great Lakes, in all seasons and weather conditions. Along the way, explore rocky shores, precipitous cliffs, sand beaches, towering dunes, and remote islands. See lighthouses from the air, land, and water. Return with a lightkeeper's daughter to the remote island that was her childhood home. Experience the sights and sounds of the Rock of Ages lantern room. See lighthouse interiors, lenses and foghorns, and gain insights into the lives of lighthouse keepers and the symbolism of lighthouses. See shipwreck remains, and travel to Death's Door. Fly over Niagara Falls, the Soo Locks, the Welland Canal, and a castle in the Thousand Islands. Kayak into sea caves at Devils Island Light. Cross Lake Michigan in dense fog on a car ferry.
As the photographers for the first book published on Great Lakes lighthouses (The Northern Lights: Lighthouses of the Upper Great Lakes), Ann and John Mahan began their lighthouse odyssey in the early 1980s — before any lighthouse guidebooks existed; and before many Fresnel lenses were removed, the last lighthouses on the Great Lakes were unmanned and many lighthouse restoration efforts begun. The 300 images in this program span a period of four decades, giving a perspective not available anywhere else. Through vivid imagery, lyrical narration, moving music, and sounds recorded in their travels, the Mahans present a unique look at Great Lakes lighthouses that is both historical and poetic.
